Drumming within

Konrad's drumming is mellifluous. Experiencing him play as he intuits a beat that flows into a song is delight as only one can have when experiencing someone display their innate talent. I made this portrait of him wanting to catch the movement of his hands as he played, the lines of his face and the unique adornments of his hat. I don't know if he actively plays with a band, but if he does.... it would be worthwhile to check out their music.

Matt Riniker - 2012 Rudy Award Semi-Finalist

This past football season I was pleased to work with the Western Dubuque Bobcat Football Program. One of their sophomore players, Matt Riniker, had his lower leg amputated due to complications from a farm accident. He now plays football with a prosthetic leg. This year he was one of the Bobcat sophomore team captains and played both offense and defense positions. To learn more about Matt's story and to vote for him, click this link: http://bit.ly/tsV59P

Mustang Football Varsity Poster

I recently finished the varsity poster for the Dubuque Hempstead Mustangs and was really pleased with how it turned out. Technically it was a challenging shoot with periods of heavy rain along with sun and clouds as a weather system moved through the area that morning. The light was changing not only between subjects but also with each frame shot. The results were awesome due to the variable weather conditions, creating a dramatic backdrop to the portraits. A shout-out to the team for their patience that morning - you guys rock!

Mustangs Celebrate Win

The Dubuque Hempstead Mustangs sophomore team captured an exciting win over city rival Wahlert in the final seconds of the game in the Rock Bowl at Loras College. The team was exuberant at the outcome and half-back Travis Garcia leaps towards the sidelines celebrating the win - bloody nose and all. All the game images can be found in the football galleries.

The Four Amigo's

These guys asked for my help...they wanted to give their Mom a gift of their portraits. She loved it and they purred their thanks.

Cloud watching

Last weekend the Perseid meteor shower was at its peak, however there was also a full moon making sightings difficult unless you wanted to stay up to the wee hours. There were some fast moving clouds passing under the moon, refracting light in the thinner portions and casting shades of blue, yellow, orange and pink - moon rainbows. Made for some great nighttime cloud watching.

Fierce play

Both Dubuque Hempstead and Senior High School played a no holds barred match up in the 3A SubState playoff. The intensity with which they played made for an exciting game and it was fun to shoot. Dubuque Senior advances to the next round after getting the win against their city rival.

Iowa Winter Games

The Iowa Winter Games recently held Alpine Racing and Half Pipe/Slopestyle events at Sundown Mountain in Dubuque, Ia.  It was awesome photographing the events and to see the competitors captured at the peak of their jump or see the alpine racers jutting around a gate.  The weather was overcast and it was like shooting in a huge white room with the white sky above and snow below. I now understand why the Inuit peoples created sunglasses for themselves.  To see all the images from the weekend competitions go to my event galleries.

Happy Valentines Day!

This pair of trees grabbed my attention right away with their white skin exposed echoing the white snow below and the beautiful blue sky with a hint of the rising moon between them. We haven't seen much blue sky lately in the midst of our midwest winter.

Snowpocalypse

Mother nature dished up quite the storm last night...high winds and 13 inches of fine snow over about eight hours. Today the wind calmed and the sun came out for a while ;)

The Photo Friday challenge this week is "Trees". These maples were audibly releasing their leaves one beautiful foggy autumn morning in the Mines of Spain, Dubuque, Ia.
